From Intern to Employee: Brittany Ruggero

Describe a little bit about your role and how you got there.

I began with Cherry Health in August 2016 as a Master of Public Health (MPH) intern at Heart of the City Health Center Adult Medicine. After I completed one semester as an intern with Adult Medicine, I was offered the opportunity to continue for a second semester to help nine medical sites submit proof documentation for National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) recognition. Upon graduation from the MPH program at Grand Valley State University, I accepted a position as the medical administrative assistant at Cherry Street Health Center. I have been at Cherry Street Health Center for over two years now. I currently hold the role of front desk supervisor, and I oversee nine patient registration specialists on the family practice and OB/GYN floors.

What’s it like to work at Cherry Health? How would you describe the culture?

Working for Cherry Health has been rewarding and valuable for personal and professional growth. Getting to interact and serve our unique and diverse patient population has been such a rewarding experience. The culture at Cherry Health is one that is positive and ever changing. Cherry Health is focused on providing high quality care and improving staff and provider experience.

Do you have any other advice for other people looking to work or intern/rotate at CH?

My advice for other people looking to work or intern/rotate at Cherry Health would be to say “yes” to any opportunities that may cross your path. If you are willing to help others within the organization and step outside your comfort zone, that will give you more exposure and experience to reach your professional goals. Also, don’t be afraid to express your interests and ideas for projects. Those in leadership positions I have had the opportunity to work with are willing to provide opportunities to develop professional growth.

Do you think the experiences you had during your time at Cherry Health is preparing you for your future career goals?

Definitely! I have a great interest in healthcare administration and public health. Working for an organization like Cherry Health that serves the community will help me reach my professional goals.

What do you enjoy most about your work experiences at Cherry Health?

The people I get to work with everyday is one of the many things I enjoy about my work experience at Cherry Health. Though I don’t provide hands on patient care in my role, I still feel like I am able to make an impact through grant work and other projects I help with. In my front desk supervisor role, I enjoy being able interact with our patients.

What’s something about your experience that you didn’t expect?

I didn’t expect to develop relationships and work with so many community organizations that share a similar mission and vision.

How does Cherry Health align with your values?

I am passionate about helping the underserved and providing resources to better health outcomes.
