October 2, 2018 (Greenville Daily News) – At Central Montcalm Middle School, teachers and staff are hoping to give students trying to find their place the option to be the “kind student.”
“Middle school is just a tough time. Kids are trying to figure where they fit and how they fit, and I think having an option to just be a kind kid gives them a whole other option,” Middle School Counselor Angela Breese said. “You don’t have to be a sports kid or a drama kid or a smart kid or a band kid. You can just be a kind kid.”
The initiative to spread kindness throughout the middle school hallways started last year when teacher Julie Olson held an eighth-grade lunch group. With administrative support, Breese, Olson, and teacher Shannon Oswald were able to implement a kindness leadership class for the 2018-2019 school year.
Switching from a lunch club to a class has given Olson, Oswald and their students more time and structure to allow the students to explore a broad range of ideas and plans on how to spread kindness.
