Teen health center planned for GRPS high school campus

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (mLive) – Cherry Health is in the process of raising $490,843 for Grand Rapids Public Schools to construct a health center on its Innovation Central High School campus.

The school board’s finance committee Monday, Oct. 26, recommended the full board approve the funding being raised for the project, which has been under discussion for a couple years.

Cherry Health has four school-based health centers currently within the district, including at City High Middle School, formerly Creston High School.

John Helmholdt, communications director for GRPS, said the need is greater at Innovation Central than City.

“It would be significantly better to have the health center where the population is larger and the highest need exists,” he said. “We also have our Academy of Health, Science and Technology on that campus and want to see how we can align the academic program.”
