Health insurance subsidies – No impact yet from court rulings

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Health navigators for the Affordable Care Act expect to field calls from residents worried about their subsidies for health insurance after a pair of court rulings was released Tuesday, June 22.

Two federal appeals court panels issued conflicting rulings about whether the subsidies could be applied in Michigan and other states that use the federal insurance exchange.

“I think the important message to send right now is that this ruling does not yet have the ruling force of law,” said Michelle Fitzgerald, of Cherry Street Health Services, who is the lead navigator for West Michigan.

“People are not immediately losing their subsidies. People who have signed up through the marketplace will continue to have coverage at the current payment.”
